STUDIO POLICY

Commitment to Excellence

2025-2026 Academic Year

Please read carefully to ensure a productive musical journey.

Inclusivity & Accessibility

Opus on Swain is committed to providing music education to everyone.

  • Neurodiversity: We welcome students with ADHD, autism, and other learning differences. We are happy to adapt our teaching methods (visual aids, movement-based learning) to suit individual needs.
  • Physical Accessibility: Our studio is wheelchair accessible. If you have specific physical requirements for playing the instrument, please let us know so we can adjust the bench or pedal extenders accordingly.
  • Safe Space: We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination based on race, gender, religion, or ability.

Attendance & Cancellations

  • 24-Hour Notice Rule: Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice will be charged the full lesson fee. No make-up credits will be issued for late cancellations.
  • Make-up Lessons: We offer 2 "flex credits" per semester for excused absences (illness/emergency) given with proper notice. These can be used to book a make-up slot or roll over to the next month.
  • Tardiness: If you are late, the lesson will still end at the scheduled time. We cannot extend lessons into the next student's time slot.
  • Teacher Absence: If the teacher must cancel due to professional performance engagements or illness, a full refund or a mutually agreed make-up time will be provided.

Instrument & Practice

  • Home Instrument: An acoustic piano (tuned annually) is ideal. If digital, it must have 88 fully weighted keys (hammer action) and a sustain pedal. Unweighted keyboards are not acceptable after the first 2 months of study.
  • Practice Expectations: Progress happens at home, not just in the lesson.
    • Beginners: 15-20 mins, 5 days/week.
    • Intermediate: 30-45 mins, 5 days/week.
    • Advanced: 60+ mins, 6 days/week.
  • Fingernails: Please keep fingernails trimmed short to ensure proper hand curvature and prevent clicking sounds on the keys.

Inclement Weather & Termination

  • Snow Days: If local schools are closed due to snow, in-person lessons will automatically shift to Online Lessons (Zoom/FaceTime) at the regular time. No refunds will be issued for weather-related shifts.
  • Discontinuing Lessons: We require a 30-day written notice (email is acceptable) to terminate lessons. This allows us to wrap up current repertoire and fill the vacancy from our waitlist.

Media Release

From time to time, we may take photos or short videos of student performances for our studio website (Gallery) or Instagram to celebrate their achievements. Student names will never be published without explicit permission. If you prefer your child not to be photographed, please let us know in writing upon registration.
